Why We Don’t Sell Hospital Beds, OPDs, or Wellness Plans

At first glance, it seems counterintuitive. Almost every healthcare platform today sells something tangible: hospital beds, OPD appointments, health checkups, diagnostics, subscriptions, wellness plans, or memberships. So when people come across Health Samadhan, one of the first questions we’re asked is:


Why don’t you sell any of that?


The short answer is simple: because selling hospital beds or appointments would fundamentally change who we work for. And that change would not favor patients.


Selling healthcare products changes incentives

Selling hospital beds or OPD appointments sounds harmless. After all, patients need hospitals. They need doctors. They need access.

But the moment a platform earns money by routing patients to specific hospitals or services, its role quietly shifts.

Its success starts depending on:

  • Which hospital pays better commissions

  • Which partner gives higher volumes

  • Which service converts faster

The platform may still claim to be “patient-first,” but incentives begin to pull decisions in another direction.

This isn’t a moral failure. It’s a structural one.



Distribution and advocacy cannot coexist

There are two very different roles in healthcare:

  1. Distribution – helping hospitals acquire patients

  2. Advocacy – helping patients make better decisions

Most platforms try to do both.

That rarely works.

When you sell OPDs or hospital beds, hospitals become your customers. Patients become traffic.

In that model:

  • hospital choice is rarely neutral

  • comparisons are limited

  • pricing transparency is selective

  • negotiation is discouraged

Because negotiating against the same entity that pays you doesn’t work.


Why do we deliberately avoid OPDs

OPDs are a high-frequency, high-volume business.

They are also where most platforms build habits and retention. But OPDs are not where patients lose the most money.

The biggest financial exposure occurs during hospitalization — especially for planned admissions.

By avoiding OPDs, Health Samadhan avoids:

Why don’t we sell hospital beds

Once beds are inventory, patients stop being represented. They start being routed.

Why wellness plans don’t fit our role

Wellness plans are valuable for many people. But they rely on recurring subscriptions and cross-selling.

That business model works when the goal is engagement and retention.

Our goal is different.

We exist for specific moments — when someone is planning a hospitalisation and needs clarity, leverage, and representation.

Adding wellness products would dilute that role and introduce incentives unrelated to patient outcomes.
